last minute same day trip to mount fuji from tokyo…impossible or totally manageable?

hey all,

currently in tokyo and wanted to hop over to mount fuji for the day, i see what trains are available and such but im a little overwhelmed by what the best course of action is. i looked at some tours but again, decided this too last minute to be able to book any.

i’m currently in shinagawa and just want to go see some pretty sites in mount fuji. have i gone mad? do i really need to plan this out in advance? can i take the Fuji excursion train there and just wander around? (kinda how i work best during traveling, im very impromptu)

also – noticed many suggestions on where to visit around the area and i want to know what’s a must see for the area, between the five lakes and yamamashi im a bit overwhelmed and want to make the most of the day trip.

currently 6.30am here – conditions are expected to be windy today so i imagine the rope way is out the question. will see about possibly renting a bike as well if that can be fit in the itinerary. many thanks!!
