I’m finishing the planning of a 15-day road trip in Japan in March-April, with my husband and mom, and we’d like to spend two days enjoying some onsen. One day would be when we’ll be staying in Nishi-Izu and the other while we’ll be staying in Takayama.
My husband has a large upper sleeve tattoo which seems tricky to cover up, so it’s made my search a bit more complicated.
Do you have recommendations of beautiful onsen accessible from these areas, where you can spend the day, and that either allow tattoos or offer outside private baths, with nice views?
I’ve been looking quite a lot but found a lot of ryokan and found myself struggling with Japanese websites (I’m learning but there’s a long way to go), so I’d actually love to hear first-hand recommendations if you’ve ever been to an onsen like that.
I’ve been looking at the Izu peninsula, around Hakone and the Five Lakes district, and at anywhere less than 2h drive from Takayama.
Also, I’m not sure if this exists but I figured it’s worth asking : since we won’t be able to stay overnight at a ryokan this time, I’d like to find a day onsen that has a bit of the ryokan experience (yukata, kaiseki, etc). It will be my husband’s first time in Japan, and my mom and I really enjoyed staying at a ryokan when we traveled there the first time. Do you know if there is something like this?
