Planning on a 3 week trip – around Dec 9 – 30. It’s been 4 years since our last visit, and it’s been too long. On our previous trips, we visit an area of Japan that we’ve never been to – while making Tokyo sort of a home base. This year, we’re thinking of going to Okinawa.
I was floating the idea of doing Okinawa for several days during the week of Christmas. But do businesses and areas of interest observe holiday hours during this week? I remember museums and businesses being closed or having more restricted operating hours in Tokyo during this time on a previous visit. The alternative plan would be to check out Okinawa the week prior.

What holidays are you talking about? There are no national holidays during December, other than 30 December for New Years. Everything should be open as usual until then.
The only hours of closure to be worried about would be the 30th because of New Years. Christmas isn’t a holiday in Japan, so most stores are normal hours.
