Tohoku or Yamanashi

In March my partner and I will be visiting Japan for three weeks. After a week of Tokyo we will be going to Kusatsu for one night to try out the onsen. After that we’re still deciding what to do for the next 4 days. We have a couple options right now and would love to some advice.

Tohoku
Always wanted to see Tohoku but we’re not sure which place to stay it could be Sendai or Yamagata we think. With day trips to Morioka and Aomori if possible.

Nagano/Yamanashi
We will travel to Karuizawa and then stay at Nagano. After that we’re following the oito and chuo lines and stay at Matsumoto for a couple nights.

After those days we will travel to Kawaguchiko.

We will be traveling by train and buses.

We love to see nature, art and be surrounded by local culture.

We also tend to take things slow and don’t like to travel a lot of distance in 1 day. (Preferably <5 hours). Would Tohoku be an option for us or is it better to just stay in Nagano and visit Yamanashi if we don’t want to be too far away from Kawaguchiko?

Do you maybe have any other tips/recommendations to do in those 4 days? Thank you so much!
