Is sexual violence in streets a typical problem in Japan as it is described in manga?

By my reading experience looks like there is no safety for girl and young woman in night time if she is alone. It applies especially Tokyo. I don’t know maybe a plot demands this but I often spot such situations in different authors’ works so I would like to know your opinion about that

  1. As a woman living in Japan for 15 years, I have been out at night, alone and have been fine.

Manga is fiction. An exaggeration of reality.

  2. Do as many Americans have superpowers as described in American comics?

Do as many American pizza delivery services just cut a hole in the bottom of the box and make a “witty joke” about sausage?

  3. risk of sexual violence happens everywhere, japan is not a fairyland where this never happens. i’ve asked this of my female senseis in japanese class and many said that they were felt up or molested almost on a daily basis in tokyo on the subway, but having moved to nyc, it never happened once in ten years here. so is it a horror wasteland where rape happens to every woman every night? no. is it still a problem? yeah, in most places. look up the stats for yourself.
