American civics resources in Japanese?

I’ve searched but came up dry.

I’m planning a move back to the states with my family. Does anyone know any resources that go over basic rights (bill of rights) for American residents, simple American history, and big differences in laws between America and Japan? A resource in Japanese would be helpful.

These are some things that would be helpful to know imo, for a Japanese person living in America.

– best practices when interacting with police officers especially when your English is less than perfect
– rights to self defense
– driving laws, like don’t switch lanes while turning and wipers on = lights on (I know this might vary based on state)

I’m missing a lot! I want to prepare my wife but need some advice! What would you advise?

  1. Most of that stuff differs by state and city.

To be honest, these are all things you should go over with her before you go and while you’re there.

If my America is Honolulu and your America is Mississippi, then there’s not much a book can do that will easily cover both areas.

  2. When interacting with police, be calm, respectful, and do as they say and you are fine. If driving and pulled over, roll driver’s window down and place hands on the steering wheel where the police officer can see them and wait for him/her to approach. Follow instructions.

Self Defense varies from state to state. There are stand your ground laws in some states, but if you move to a more liberal state like Minnesota, California, or New York, or criminals can have more rights that the victim. Some states have conceal – carry laws. I have a permit to carry a gun, but choose not to because it is not really needed. If I sell something and the purchaser wants to meet at night in a parking lot, I will arm myself.

Driving laws are the same pretty much everywhere. Be respectful, use turn signals, do not follow too closely, and stay off of your phone while driving unless you have a way to do it hands free.

  3. Japanese embassy in DC website might have pertinent info. Travel guides for Japanese tourists, too.

  4. How many on here remember the Japanese teen shot to death in America when he went to the wrong house for a party? Homeowner had a gun and said “freeze”. Kid didn’t understand and was fatally shot. Every TV news program here was teaching what “freeze” meant after that
