PR question: to have or not to have

Hi all,

I moved to Japan this year and next year have the opportunity to apply for PR.

It’s hard to predict how long I’ll be in Japan for but five years plus is feasible.

I’ve received word from some colleagues that having PR can be a negative thing as it means being subject to extra tax which I otherwise would not be eligible for as a ‘non resident tax payer’.

For me, it seemed like a good opportunity to hold PR otherwise if I want to switch jobs I need my new employer to sponsor my visa. Just curious as I’ve spoken to two people who’ve said don’t do it but also aware that this could be a reaction from them as they’re not able to get it yet.hencr human nature is to dislike what you can’t have. Then again, they could be more knowledgeable than me on this.

Tldr:Please could you help me understand how the advantages Vs disadvantages pays off from having PR status?
