Working remote for JP company in US?

I see that this sub is mostly people in Japan, but I hope you can help me understand this better. I’m located in the US, and freelancing with a Japanese company. They pay me in yen and according to my first 支払通知書, they’ve withheld 20.42% for taxes. I assume I have to pay US taxes on this income? I’m told the foreign earned income exclusion is for income earned while abroad, which this isn’t. Can I get the Japanese tax back? Do I need professional help to do so?
