Requirements: Residing in Japan

Hi all,

I’m currently residing overseas, looking to move to Japan within the next year. I’m looking at gaijinpot (any other good websites?) for job opportunities in Tokyo specifically, and have noticed than many state, “requirements: residing in Japan” in the search results. When I actually click on the postings this is sometimes not actually mentioned in the job description.

I’m wondering if anyone knows the specifics of what “requirements: residing in Japan” actually means. Does it mean I need to already have a work visa to apply? Or if I were to go over on a working holiday visa would I become eligible to apply? Or, alternatively, could it mean that they’re happy to hire from overseas as long as I take care of relocation myself?

I’ll quickly run over my qualifications and the type of work I’m looking for just in case anyone has any additional advice for my specific situation: JLPT N1, PhD in translation (Japanese-English), completed a masters in Japan, completed unpaid internship at a subtitling company in Japan, university tutoring experience in Japanese-language classes, and highschool level visiting teacher experience as part of a part time job in Japan (classes taught in Japanese). No previous full-time work experience. I’ve applied for several post-doc level academic positions through J-REC, but I want to cast my net wide in case all of those fall through. I’m open to just about any kind of job but in order of preference I would say (1) academic position, (2) translation company, (3) anything else (English teaching, sales etc).

Any advice regarding my question or my situation is greatly appreciated.
