Hi all, just a question regarding the Japanese bathroom.

I saw modern Japanese bathroom on some YT videos, and they are consist of bath tub, shower heads, anti-fog mirror, and anti-slip flooring. I am curious to the flooring because according to the description in one of the vide, it is a rubberize tile, but it seems to be a part of the overall bath configuration, (which it includes a drain cover, which is a also rubberized and contains several sieve to filter dirt and/or trash).

My question is what is the name of that flooring? Also, where can we buy it? Can it be purchased alone or is it a part of the bath tub? I hope this makes sense.

Thank you

  1. Doesn’t sound like any Japanese bathroom I’ve seen.

Prefabricated plastic units are common as are Numerous other miscellaneous set ups.

  2. My shower/bath (in a house) has that type of floor. No idea what it’s called, sorry. Check Lixil or Toto shops, maybe?

  4. This is part of the bath.
Japanese baths are called “unit baths”. It’s essentially a “box ” that you slot into your house, so that the foundations, which is wooden in most Japanese houses, don’t get damp and damaged.

The one shown on the video is a product of Toto. They use a soft rubbery material for their floors. It repels water quite nicely and safe for kids.

  5. Bathrooms come as premade units with standardized size (replacing an old unit for a new one only takes 2-3hours), you can’t buy the flooring alone. You can’t even buy the unit itself afaik, you just pay a company to install it in your apartment/house.

That being said, some reform companies may work with older houses which didn’t have yet standardized room size and thus will need to build custom sized bathrooms from raw material. Your best bet is to find such reform company and ask them where they get their raw material (and how it’s called)

  6. This post just made me wish my bathroom unit came with an anti-fog mirror…

  7. I will be getting that unit bathroom this summer. Soft floor is speciality of TOTO and is available in cheaper options too – reason why I have chosen this maker. As other people mentioned it’s part of the whole unit and cannot buy only tiles.
The bathtub is also layered with insulating materials.
