Does my child need any paperwork when he is born for “dual citizenship” option?

My wife is Japanese and we both live in the US. We are expecting a baby soon and are trying to make sure we submit any and all paperwork to allow our child the option to legally choose Japanese citizenship. My wife said that her research suggested that we must submit some documents to Japan within 3 months of the child being born, but I’m having a hard time confirming these details when searching in English. Can anyone help me confirm this?

I realize that there are some “gray areas” with those who have Japanese passports but also US passports and simply don’t admit that they have both (while in Japan)… But that is a question for another time. For now, we just want to make sure that we don’t deprive our child of the option to choose by accidentally forgetting some paperwork. Thank you in advance for any tips or thoughts!

tldr; Baby on the way, half Japanese. Do we need to submit paperwork so that child has option to choose Japanese nationality by age of 22, or is this automatic?
