Question about an old Okinawan or Japanese term for a disease: sin-kae-ju

My grandmother is from Teruma, near Naha. She says her mother had sin-kae-ju and had trouble walking. She died when my mother was very young. We are not entirely sure if we are transliterating this correctly, but: sin (rhymes with tin), kae (rhymes with may), and ju (rhymes with jew). What disease could this have been?
