I’ve never used Merriam-Webster but the Japanese dictionary app/website I use is called Jisho.
You can search using text (word/sentences/grammar), radicals, scanning photos/using the camera, or by drawing.
No word-a-day, but it does have sections for news, grammar & JLPT study guides. It also has a classifications” menu of listed vocab by topic (everything from theatre to electrical engineering!)

JapanesePod101.com has a word of the day through email for free you just have to subscribe
