Update Edit (6/14) I should have invited everyone who responded to this thread to a chat and then in the chat I’ve shared a link to the discord “Kyoto Adventurers Guild” however due to people not joining the Discord I’m trying to reschedule to next week (probably Friday the 23rd).
So please don’t turn up at Apple-san tomorrow expecting a game. If you want to attend then please join the Discord so I know you want to attend and also so we can prepare characters. If you haven’t received an invite or would like an invite feel free to respond here or message me.
(Original) I’m a long term resident in Japan who hasn’t had the opportunity to play a Tabletop RPG for years. A new board game cafe has just opened up in Kitaoji so I thought it might be the time to try and get a group together. The space costs 800 yen per person for 3 hours so I was thinking starting some weeknight next week (thinking Thursday the 15th of June) and playing from 19:00 – 22:00. Rather than 800 yen if you’re happy to pay 1000 yen to help alleviate my costs then I would appreciate it but it’s not compulsory. If there’s money left over I’ll stick it in a pot and use it for buying materials or perhaps getting snacks?

As for content I’m happy to DM but haven’t played since 3.5/4th edition so I thought I’d get the 5e essentials kit and play through the Lost Mines of Phandelver/Dragon of Icespire Peak content. It’ll help me to have some basis to work from since I don’t have a lot of time to make up everything whole cloth. Having said that, I like to think I’m quite flexible as a DM so I’m not looking to strictly railroad the party and like to think we will be crafting the story together.
As a player you don’t need to be experienced with DnD or any other system. The adventures are aimed at beginning players and there are pre-generated characters available (see below). I’ll try and get a set of dice I can share but if you come and enjoy you might like to get your own in the future.

If you’re an experienced player (or you enjoy a mild challenge) then you can go ahead and make a 2nd level character. Technically the adventure starts at level 1 but from what I gather it’s better to get out of level 1 as soon as possible so I thought I’d just start at 2. We’ll follow a milestone leveling system so players will reach level 3 when it seems most appropriate for the content. The setting of the adventures is near Neverwinter but you could feasibly come from anywhere on the Sword Coast or the Forgotten Realms provided you have an excuse for being in Neverwinter when the party gathers for their first adventure together.
If we can find 4 players then I think we could get started and maybe aim for a game every couple of weeks? If there’s more interest I could probably stretch to 6 players.
If you have any questions then let me know.
