Japanese person to sign rental contact

I am in the process of looking for an apartment for when I start my new job in April.

I have been living in Japan for almost 3 years, but up I have only lived in an apartment rented by my dispatch company. This is my first time trying to find a place on my own.

I found a place I am interested in. I had a Japanese friend call the realtor for me, but the realtor said they could only rent the apartment to me if a Japanese person or company signed the rental agreement.

Is this a reasonable thing to ask? I am fine with working with a guarantor company and my friend will ask as my contact person. But doesn’t feel comfortable asking someone else to sign a contract.

Does anyone have any advice on this? Would this be a job for a guarantor company?
