Does Japan’s internet just suck? Or just Tokyo? Or maybe my apartment is broken?

EDIT: My Japanese model router came. It’s just as slow. I’ve concluded it’s an infrastructure issue. Network isn’t actually built to serve 1gbps to everyone like the US. But at the same time Japan doesn’t seem to be selling speed tiers like the US. As they’re aware that it’s under built, so they just sell it like wireless networks where you’re paying for a connection, and actual speeds are heavily affected by environment. I just approached it wrong.

So I recently moved to Japan and finally got my fiber installed. I was pretty excited because I kept hearing about how Japan’s internet is the fastest in the world.

For reference I was using AT&T Fiber in Los Angeles, with their 1Gbps plan I always got a constant 960/830 no matter what time of the day it was. I’ve also visited friends in South Korea, and their 1Gbps service as super consistent as well.

So I finally get my Ahamo Hikari installed. It’s supposed to be a 1gbps service so I was expecting to see numbers similar to my old AT&T Fiber. But my speeds are… 200/80? And it also kept changing throughout the day. The fastest speed I got was just now, at 4am. Of 600/400. How is that 1 gig service?

Is my internet broken? Or is this a Tokyo problem with too many people? I live inside the Yamanote line.

And my router is the same one I was using back in the US, the ASUs AX-86U Pro. I installed a firmware that’s supposedly compatible eith the ipv6 over ipv4 protocol according to ASUS. Maybe I need a new router?
