How significant is not being a member of JCIS for an international school’s legitimacy?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been doing some research into international schools in Japan and one thing that has stuck out to me has been how few schools are a member of the Japan Council of International Schools vs the number of international schools in the country. I realise that there are an abundance of bilingual ‘international’ schools that claim to be international simply because they offer the IB. However, there are a few international schools which are accredited by CIS, WASC or EARCOS but are not a member of JCIS. Does this have any implications for how legitimate they are as an international school? What distinguishes a JCIS school from a non-JCIS one? The reason I ask is because from researching the schools online I’ve seen some fairly dire things written about some of the JCIS schools (such as Canadian International School, Tsukuba International and KIST) – what is it about these schools that allows them to qualify for JCIS membership as opposed to, say, Makuhari International School, which is CIS and WASC accredited but not with JCIS?

Thank you!
