How long to hold on to important papers and documents before throwing them away?

Spring is around the corner and I’m in need of some serious spring cleaning. I’ve accumulated a large amount of papers, all of which are in Japanese. (My Japanese isn’t very good atm.)

I’m wanting to shred whatever it is I won’t need in the future and am trying to figure out what I need to keep and what can go.

I’m in this limbo of not knowing how long certain documents are by law required to be in your possession for x amount of time, in case it needs to be reviewed for whatever reason later. Or if there are certain papers I should keep if I decide to apply for PR. Idk how long to keep receipts/bills, etc.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I’m genuinely just not wanting to fuck up. 🥲 My apartment feels cluttered from all the papers and I just wanna have peace of mind if I get rid of stuff.

Edit: **Which** documents do I need to keep?
