Hi all,
The title says most of it. I grew up with a dishwasher, and, as the person primarily cooking and doing dishes in my household, I desperately want to get one, but everything I’ve heard about Japanese dishwashers (reddit and my wife’s family) seems to say you’re better off without them.
The house hold is only my wife and I atm. I also have a space next to the sink (originally for a fridge) which could easily accommodate a freestanding 60cm dishwasher.
So I decided I should get a fancy foreign one and went to investigate getting a Miele. I live in Kyoto so I went to the Miele shop in Osaka, and basically came to the conclusion I would have to get a built in installed to get something from them, which includes needing to make a hole in the side of the sink to access the drain under my sink, add a 200v line from my breaker (or combine 2 from existing plugs?), and install a stand and discrete countertop on top of the the dishwasher. This includes for screws in my wall. I am willing to pay to get this done, but given my past experience with Japanese property management, I assume that the very concept of these changes will cause an aneurism
As for the cost, I’m dying for the dishwasher and would be willing to spend up to around 10k USD/1.4million yen including the fees to get it set up and cleaned up when we move
So my questions are:
Are there any other good free standing options?
Are there any truly large and effective countertop equivalents?
Is my budget feasible?
What happens if we alter the apartment? Is it better to ask for forgiveness than permission?
Bonus question. I am also looking for a counter top oven suitable for roasting vegetables and cooking bread at the scale of normal American oven (1/2 professional size baking sheets to my understanding). Anyone have recommendations? I’m super wary given my experience with combo microwave ovens so far, which seem to be extremely slow to preheat, and despite promising high temps, seem to be unable to brown anything (is this just because I was working with cheap ones?)
