Importing one’s own Japanese car to the US? Does it make sense?

Hi all,

I work for an American company and I may have the chance to transfer for a number of years (2-5) to our HQ in California.

I have my own car here (Saitama). Nothing fancy, just a very common Toyota C-HR that I bought new almost 4 years ago.

Would it make sense for me to import my own car to the US if the transfer happened (and then bring it back to Japan 2-5 years later), or would it be better to just sell the car before moving?

I’m thinking not only about the cost of importing the car, but about other practical issues such as registering it here, getting insurance, having the handling wheel on the right, getting it serviced/repaired, whether the onboard Japanese GPS would work in the US, etc.

Doing maintenance myself is not an option because I suck at everything not related to computers. 😅

Thanks in advance.
