Apologies for bad English.
I had a very refreshing and new experience at an onsen in Kanagawa.
They also had a haircut salon so I just gave it a try. The guy was an experienced old man and I just initiated the conversation. I loved how he responded so naturally and got the Convo going with no sugarcoating and “nihongo jozu desu ne” kind of compliments. We went on to talk about politics and my future plans and life advices.
Inside the onsen I was corrected by another old man when I was using shower the wrong way, and when I went inside the pool another old man beside me stroke up a Convo with me and we talked about economics, china, culture, diversity and the company he works at.
It was rare for me to talk to ppl in an onsen where everyone just want to relax and unwind, and never felt proud of myself and all the struggles of learning Japanese finally paid off.
