Kyoto to Tokyo with an overnight stay in Mt. Fuji, Hakone stop or not?

Would appreciate feedback, experiences, etc.

I’ll be traveling from Kyoto to Tokyo towards the end of December and have been debating whether to stop in Hakone. We do plan to stay one night at Mt. Fuji to explore the area a bit, with our main focus being on Fuji-Q Highland, staying at the resort that allows early entry.

The only major interest in Hakone is taking the ropeway to the station to try the black egg and see the volcanic valley. We wouldn’t do the full loop. The Open Air Museum is another attraction of interest, though I’ve heard it may have snow. I’m aware there’s much more to see, but our time is limited, and we have to choose what’s most interesting and different for us.

Given our time constraints, I keep going back and forth on our itinerary..

I considered making a stop in Hakone to do what we mentioned and then heading over to Tokyo, but I also thought about trying to get to Mt. Fuji after Hakone before heading to Tokyo. From my research, the transportation to Mt. Fuji from Hakone doesn’t seem as easy.

I thought about just skipping Hakone altogether, staying in Tokyo, and then spending one night at Mt. Fuji, which is in our plans for Fuji-Q Highland. However, I wondered if there might be a tour to Hakone from Mt. Fuji (I haven’t found one in my quick search so far)

Given that we will be there towards the end of December, is it possible to visit ice caves or do you have other suggestions for two older teenagers in the Mt. Fuji area? I would feel better forgoing Hakone if we found something interesting like caves to explore.

We will have explored the places of interest in Hiroshima and Miyajima before going to Kyoto.
