SIM cards

The family and I are going to Japan in May, and we’re trying to be prepared.
We live in Australia, and I want to know if it’s possible to order SIM cards online so we can put them in our phones as soon as we arrive. We will be taking a child each out on adventures a few times and will need to be able to contact each other without having to rely on public WiFi.

  1. Hi, I am travelling next month and have ordered a pocket WiFi router, for my son and I. As I think for larger groups but also ease of use, these are better. I read that sometimes setting up a sim can be a pain.

We are picking it up at the airport when we arrive and delivering back on departure after the month of travel.

Although I believe you cannot buy these at the airport once you have arrived, I think it has to be pre-ordered.

With the router it’s a separate device that you just charge up each day and have with you. You can link multiple devices/phones that way and get a fast reliable service throughout the country.

    I used Ninja WiFi https://ninjawifi.com/en/sp

Edit: Having re-read your question, maybe the router wouldn’t work for you. But from what I understand, you can buy a sim and data at the airport, no problem at all. I did read that some companies can send a sim to your home country, so you’re ready when landing too. This might help https://matcha-jp.com/en/12422

  2. Yes, you can. The ones you get here are usually resold sims from Thai or Hong Kong telecoms, but the resellers will give you English instructions. It’s worked well enough for me.

  3. If you are able to use E-sims on your phone you can get that installed. No need for physical SIM cards. I’m Dutch and installed one on my iPhone months before the trip and it worked perfectly. Internet directly after landing. Used the Airalo app and paid $10 for 10GB of data.

  4. You can use an eSIM if your phone supports it. I used one from airalo in my iPhone about a month ago. No need to get anything in the mail or go anywhere to buy something.

  5. Sakura sim card, they are physical sims. Using one right now and it’s worked flawlessly since pickup

  6. I think travel eSIMs are definitely the best choice here. If you don’t know which to choose, as there are many options from different providers, you can check out this [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/best_eSIM_providers/comments/1984tvl/best_esim_providers_comparison_table_for/) – it really helped me out.

It just let’s you compare the providers, and there are some functionalities mentioned in there as well, so you can choose the best price for your option.
