E-ticket question relating to travelling

Crazy question, but I’ve seen a lot of mention of passes that are on your phone for travelling to Japan (JPass, etc). I was wondering if anyone can tell me if these passes can be on one phone for the whole family or does each person need the apps on their own device?
For reference, I’ve used similar ones when travelling in Europe and it could be one phone per device, however a few here have mentioned how it worked for one person, but the other needed to buy theirs as the app did not work on the phone (within the same party).

  1. Can you clarify exactly which passes you mean?

Eg the JR Pass for JR trains is a physical ticket that you insert in a machine. A Suica is a stored value tap-to-use pass that can optionally be used from a wallet on a phone. Prepurchased shinkansen tickets can be linked to a Suica so you can tap into the station.

In all those cases, each person needs their own.
