My wife and I visited Osaka and stayed in the Namba area. We got up fairly early and we’re surprised to see falling down drunk people attempting to walk down the street. Many of them were put into taxis by servers from bars/clubs they were hanging out at. I know Japanese like to party but this was nuts! It also wasn’t one or two isolated incidents: it happened multiple times over back to back mornings around 8am.
Anyway, is this common throughout Japan? They looked like locals (some were very nicely dressed and there were both men and women) and I was curious if anyone here knows what’s going on. It was like Tuesday and wed morning so not exactly traditional party nights. Is it that rough in Osaka that people just need to drink their faces off on the weekday or is there something else going on?
No hate on Osaka, we had a good time but curious since I don’t often see that many people falling down drunk. Not since I was in college, but these were older adults and clearly inebriated.
Edit: Thanks for the responses. I guess the stigma about drinking explains it all. The people I saw drinking were all adults and as an American I wasn’t used to seeing people getting smashed at 8am since college. Even then, most people I know had limits.
