I’m still confused about 年金.

**Context**: I work remotely in Japan under a spousal visa for a US company. I pay US taxes, including Social Security, and I make my wages in USD. I have a residence card with 就労制限なし status.

To be concise, I’ve done a lot of research on the Japan National Pension Service and, more precisely, whether or not I am supposed to be paying for it. I’ve been paying monthly (16520yen/month) for it for around half a year now.

Given my situation is a bit uncommon, I’m still a bit confused about these monthly payments. From the research I *have* done, all signs seem to point to me being required to pay. The issue is that currently I’m paying for retirement in *both* countries, and I feel like I’m being drained of money unnecessarily.

Is there anyone here who can break it down simply for me, and let me know if I am going about this correctly or not? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
