First time in Japan, with a short stay what to do, where to stay

Hello everyone! My wife and I will travel to Osaka on 21-26 March from Istanbul. We will arrive and depart from Kansai airport.
We would love to see a lot of places, walk until we got tired and enjoy the local food. Osaka, Kyoto and Nara are on tour top of the list.
I’m trying to cheat from other travel advices, itineraries but I need to make mine.
First of all, do I need to carry Japanese Yen with me? I have my credit card (both visa and master) and I can bring some cash dollars with me if it’s easy to exchange.
What is the best way to travel around Kansai region? I’ve seen some tourist passes but I don’t know which one is best to buy for us.
We must stay in Osaka because we’ll arrive pretty late on our first day. For other days where do you recommend us to stay? Daily roundtrips seems possible but it’s also tiring I suppose.
Where should we get traditional gifts/souvenirs in Osaka and/or Kyoto?
Thanks \^\^
