Hello, everyone. I am a college student that’s going to Japan for an exchange program in September, and I’ll be there for about a full year. I have taken two semesters worth of Japanese classes that went through all of the Genki I textbook, and this summer I’m doing an intensive language school that equates to another two semesters of content and uses the Genki II textbook. I also study in my own time outside of homework but it’s not much more than vocab that the book doesn’t teach us.
I have been doing pretty well in class (A for both semesters so far, consistent A’s on written and speaking exams) and I was actually recommended to study abroad by my professor. I was just wondering how prepared I would be with the knowledge I have/will have gained. Obviously I know I’m not going to be anywhere near fluent or probably even all that good but I am just concerned that I will have a difficult time getting around and such.
All classes at my exchange university will be taught in English except the Japanese language classes I’ll take, so I’m not worried about that. I’m mostly wondering about daily life stuff like making Japanese friends and finding opportunities for future employment (to maybe move back after I graduate). I’m sure while I am there my Japanese will improve even more from classes and immersion.
Thank you!
