Question about international shipping rates?

I’ve got a small business going just selling things on auction and I make pretty decent money but I want to be able to ship internationally including the US but after getting some quotes on small boxes (20cmx20cmx10cm) at 1kg I’m getting 1万4000円 for DHL and 1万-2万 from FedEx after getting some increasingly ridiculous quotes for 10kg boxes 10万-20万 I’m starting to think I’m doing things wrong. Does anyone have any experience with this that can point me in the right direction? Thanks all.

  1. I’ve shipped items through Yamato, which is UPS on the US side. Pretty pricey but not as much as the quotes you’re getting. Last box I shipped was during Christmas, 40,40,50cm and 5kg, was 9000 yen.

  2. If shipping small but heavier things use Yamato. If you are shipping light but large things use Japan post.

Yamato charges by box size and has a weight limited by size. Japan post charges by weight.

  3. If you are shipping at least 50 packages per month, you can negotiate a business contract with one of the carriers. We used to ship a lot to the US using DHL and received 70% to 80% off their published rates. If you’re shipping enough volume (a lot more than 50!) then you can even negotiate the volumetric weight divisor. Typical is 5000 but you can do better.
