Half-width katakana

I saw a screenshot of a TV drama with subtitles that had katakana in half-width. I think they did so for space concern, but this practice is nice in my opinion, as 1) long katakana is less daunting, 2) it’s easier to see word boundaries from a glance, in the same sense as kanji being good for fast read.

Is this a common practice in certain situations?
