Got these from Walmart. How do I make them taste like restaurant sashimi? It’s my first time doing this.

I left them in the freezer for almost two weeks. I used to go to a grocery store nearby that had already prepared sashimi. Sadly, I moved to a new area, and don’t have anything like that near me.

  1. You don’t. That tuna is not sushi grade. Not only that, I am assuming you don’t have a sushi knife which only has one side sharpened for a cleaner cut.

  2. I’ve done a [video](https://youtube.com/shorts/MYxarLu10M8?si=qzcd-7mJ_bl4uZ65) on the Walmart — it’s bottom of the barrel and the price reflects that. Not only is it cut inappropriate for sushi (it’s fine for poke), but the steaks were also gassed for that bright color. The ingredients will list woodsmoke which is another term for CO

Also you froze and thawed it in the packet which can lead to anaerobic growth. These don’t need to be frozen and if you do, next time thaw it opened but wrapped in paper towel to wosk away moisture

Lastly it gets caught in SEA and then processed at another location, further obscuring the source chain

    Not worth the risk imo

The octopus is overcooked, but it’s fine to make nigiri with

  3. I wouldn’t with the tuna. The octopus is cooked so I would try to cut it thin with a very sharp knife. I wouldn’t go as thick as I see it in restaurants because I am going to bet it’s going to be much chewier. Maybe take a slice and see if you like it straight? If not, it goes in soup.

  4. You can only make that shit taste like restaurant grade sushi if you’re a magician.
Seriously, do you think proper sushi/sashimi tastes the way it does because of something done to it??

  5. Sorry, try again. Cook the tuna for sandwiches. Next time talk to a fish monger about what they suggest.

  6. Go get some high quality tuna and compare it to this Walmart tuna steak. It’s night and day difference.

  7. Christ. Your freezer isn’t cold enough to make them safe, and you shouldn’t eat Walmart fish

  8. Go buy Orca Bay ahi tuna. They freeze theirs at the proper temperature for the proper length of time.

  9. Remember when this sub was beautiful pictures of sushi in all of it’s glorious forms and not 1,000 people wanting to know if they can eat Costco salmon raw?

    I ‘member.
