Job Hunting on a Working Visa

Hey all, I’ve been living and working in Japan for almost 2 years now, and I have an Engineer/ specialist in humanities/ Int’l Services visa valid until 2025.
However, the contract with my current company is expiring at the end of March and a company I was applying for unfortunately rescinded their offer at the last minute, so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find a new job by the end of March.

My current plan was to live in a share house and apply for jobs for a few months. I know that by default I have 3 months after my current job ends to find something new before my visa expires, but I don’t want to get deported if I can’t find anything in that time. I’ve heard that if you talk to Immigration you can get this period extended if you show evidence of your job search. Is this true? Where would be the best place to get more information? I was thinking to either go to Immigration directly or go to my local embassy (American).
