Demand for Cybersecurity in Japan?

Hello! I’m a 19M from the States. I’m currently working towards my bachelor’s in cybersecurity, and in my second year right now (3+1 with community college/local university). Over the past year, I’ve been considering wanting to move to Japan in the future, but I’m not really sure if it’s truly worth it.

For my profession, I’m, again, working towards a bachelor’s in cybersecurity. I’m working towards getting my CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) and my RHCSA (Red Hat Certified System Administrator) for those familiar with the field. I have no IT work experience as of right now, but plan on trying to get some after I’m finished with my degree.

My reasons for wanting to work in Japan would be the culture, the beauty of the country itself, and the potential opportunities I could get. I was mainly inspired by a friend whose aunt worked as an English teacher in Kyoto back in 2002. A trip to there in 2025 is happening, and honestly, immersion in the actual country itself would definitely help my decision.

Since 2022, I’ve been learning Japanese, albeit a little inconsistent, but I have more consistent lately. I don’t hold any JLPT certifications yet, but my goal is try and shoot for an N5 or N4 level in December, and then (hopefully) try to work my up to N2 or higher by 2028. It really depends how consistent and effective my studying is. I’ve been using Kanshudo and Genki to help with my studies.

Nothing is finalized, of course. I’m mainly just looking to see if there’s any demand for cybersecurity positions, and, for those in said field, what it’s like working there.
