31M Canadian Thinking About WHV Again

Hello,

I’ve posted here before to ask about working holiday visa before. Just to give a brief background, I am a Korean-Canadian and I got my WHV just before I turned 31 last year, which expires this June. I was going to just give it up and visit Japan for 1-2 months instead, but lately have been thinking about it again.

I have been working in Engineering field for about 8 years and quitting my job to go for 1-year WH is what I am most worried about, but now I am having “I will find something when I come back” mindset. I have been learning Japanese a little bit for the last several months and only know very basic Japanese. I know finding work in Japan (I am thinking Sapporo) will be very difficult with limited Japanese, but I am having a similar mindset of “I will find something if I can speak Korean and English”. Maybe Japan is not the best country to think like this, but I donnoe… Am I being too naive thinking like these?

I guess my two main concerns are:

* I am thinking about going to Sapporo, because I am really cannot handle heat and heard bad things about summer days in Japan. Sapporo weather seems pretty similar to Toronto, Canada. I guess Tokyo would be the most foreigner-friendly and there would be more opportunities there. Would it be too difficult to find a job with limited Japanese in Sapporo? Ideally, I would want to stay in the City and stay away from Ryokan and Ski Resort jobs (assuming these are more in suburb area?).
* I believe there are some foreigner-friendly rental agencies in Tokyo that don’t require 1-year contract (like sharehouse?). Would it be difficult to find a place as a foreigner in Sapporo that doesn’t require 1-year contract?

Please share your experience and help me with my decision! Criticisms on my naive thoughts are welcome :).
