I may be coming to Okinawa to do some work at the University of the Ryukyus (and would be living in their housing). What’s the area around the university like?

Hi, I’m an American and I have the opportunity to come to Okinawa for some time and do research at the University of the Ryukyus. I’d be living in their on-campus housing.

I’m wondering, what is the area around campus like? Are there good restaurants, and bars/nightlife? It looks a bit quiet on Google Maps, is that the case or is it a lively area?

Does it have a lot of foreigner/military presence? (I’d actually prefer living somewhere without many other foreigners, I’d like to try and immerse myself in the local area rather than hanging out with a bunch of other Americans)

How walkable/bikeable is the area? (I’d have a car for when its necessary, but prefer to bike and walk as much as possible)

Anything else I should know or think about, regarding the part of the island? Or, about the university or island in general?
