I am a MEXT scholar American, and I saw the tiny rooms without an in house washer and drier. I am in my early 30s and I know for a fact I would be unhappy if I lived in a single room dorm. (Why I didn’t apply for that) I lived in Japan for 2 years in the countryside in a spacious 3 room apartment and LOVED it. It was 5 man a month. I would be happy with 2 rooms maybe (though I prefer tatami room, kitchen, bedroom). I move there in April so I need to prepare quickly or else I’ll be living in a ryokan for a month lol. With my scholarship paying between 500-700 would be tough but I could make it work. I am very willing to leave in the outskirts and not in the main city as long as the bike ride is within 30 minutes.
