Small Town Recommendations

Hi all! I am traveling to South Korea from late June – mid July to meet my partner’s family and friends. The total length of my vacation is 3 weeks, and the two of us thought it might be nice to take a short trip to Japan. This will be my first time traveling to Asia.

I am trying to decide where to spend approximately 4 nights in Japan. I’ve always wanted to visit Japan, but this go round, due to the limited time, my priority is to avoid very stressful situations and places, and have a nice getaway of eating and exploring the local area by foot. I hope that on my next trip I can see all of the amazing attractions in the major cities!

So, does anyone have any suggestions regarding smaller towns that would be optimal for exploring around, eating good food, and enjoying some nature/culture? Not required, but bonus points if any Ghibli films were inspired by them..!

  1. The offshore island of Yakushima seems to tick off all the boxes: nature, inspiration for Ghibli film, slow pace, 1 -2 nights there then 1-2 nights at nearby city of Kagoshima (with direct flights to SK from the city airport) sounds doable.

  2. Do you speak any Japanese? Reason for asking is because you might find it quite challenging going to a smaller town where english is rarely if ever spoken. Go for it if you want a wake up call given this will be your first time traveling to Asia.
