having trouble hearing when double consonants are used in words, what’s a good method to learn this?

To learn Hiragana I’m doing tests and quizzes where you hear a word and then write down what it’s supposed to be, but when it comes to words like こんにちは (Konnichiwa) and ほっかいどう(Hokkaido) I have a really hard time hearing the double consonants and it’s tripping me up a lot and this is with someone purposefully going slower to sound out the word, I’m not sure how I’m ever going to be able to hear it in a conversation where people are speaking much faster. Are you just supposed to memorize which words have this feature? Or is there a method to it that I’m just not getting.

Any help is appreciated
