けど is rather „eventhough“ instead of „but“?!

So I See けど often translated as „but“
Though it seem to be it should rather be expressed as „eventhough“.
This is a minuscule differentiation, but it would make more sense to me.
This is is just a feeling of mine, so I would like someone to correct me, if I’m mistaken.

家に帰りたいけど飲みましょう

As 飲みましょ could just be omitted, it seems to me that „but“ is better translated as „eventhough“.

What do you think?

  1. Is English your native language? I don’t see how you’re making the distinction in your example.

Furthermore, Japanese is often not going to be a 1:1 exact equivalent to English in regards to translation. Often we just try our best with the words we choose to convey the same meaning. I wouldn’t worry about it too much because this is something we encounter pretty often between Japanese and English grammar.

  2. Maybe, but I think that “even though” maps better onto an expression like にもかかわらず

E: maybe のに would be even better

  3. In this specific example, “but” would be the word I go to in a translation.

However, I think けど could sometimes be interpreted as “even though” instead. As someone else here already said, you’re not gonna get perfect 1:1 words and their uses are gonna differ from English words, so some words won’t translate the same every time.

Best not to try making them do that and just learning their meaning through a strictly Japanese context and coming up with the appropriate words for a translation on a case by case basis.

    Edit: wrong word

  4. As someone else suggested here “But” is the best fit for the intended meaning [edit] for the example provided in the question.[/edit]

Contextually, this conversation is more akin to someone changing their mind on the fly about going home vs. drinking. So, “I really wanna go home, but let’s grab a drink” is the closest it comes to. In certain situations it is possible to use けど to mean “even though”, although のに is typically better suited.
