Which chat app(s) do okinawans use?

I’m about to move to Okinawa and plan to continue practicing Japanese. I’m not going to have a Japanese phone plan. If I want to meet and keep in contact with locals which chat app should I use?

  1. You’re going to need a japanese phone plan to sign up on the japanese chat apps. That’s just how it is.

  2. Line (Personal friends and Family), Instagram(Social Folks), and Twitter X(Online Friends).
I recommend getting Mineo- KDDI AU for Okinawa for Line because you can age verify and fast speeds. I have the 20GB per month plus the data sharing with family and bucket that lets you hoard data credit forever that you didn’t use. (Message me, and I will help you set it up because everything is in Japanese.)

Rakuten Mobile is good, too! It is legit unlimited data. It was terrible on base when it launched. They give you free 2GB global data roaming or 128kbps for free each month.

If you are going to travel a lot, Linemo is king. 20GB roaming.

I used to use Google Fi- its not exactly cheap…

But before you leave, port your number to Google Voice/MagicJack (if you are from the US)
Plus Rebtel. It is only calling outward but good!
