  1. Looks amazing. Is it acceptable to eat on long train rides in Japan? Haven’t been yet but I’m planning on going. Don’t want to commit a faux pas but I’d probably get hungry on a long ride.

  2. In Japan, ekiben are sold at stations where long-distance trains stop.

Long-distance trains have tables in their seats. You can also eat and drink on the box-seat train with the seats facing each other.

However, it seems that the manners are bad if you eat lunch on short-distance trains and commuting / school trains only in urban areas such as Tokyo and Osaka.

It is not clearly specified whether or not you can eat or drink on a Japanese train, but if the Japanese around you are eating ekiben, please think that the train can eat foods.

There are stations selling station valves all over Japan.

There are some high-class ekiben that require reservations, but they are generally around 500-2000 yen.

Enjoy the ekiben in the city you visit.

  3. いただきます!

Bento boxes always look delicious, and nearly always are!!

As I have said more times than I can count, I am really looking forward to having authentic Japanese food whenever I can go back to Japan.

  4. One of my great pleasures when visiting Japan, is travelling on the Shinkansen whilst eating a bento, with an Asahi beer!
