Reduced speed on unlimited eSim plans

I’m struggling to get a clear answer from various eSim providers (Airalo, Holafly, Ubigi) about whether their “unlimited” data plans throttle the speed after a certain usage level (say, 1GB in 24 hours or something)? Experiences? More generally, I’ll be there for 19 days, with likely heavy usage of maps (but not a lot else when not connected to wifi at a hotel). Is 30GB enough for the trip?

  1. Didn’t feel a lowered speed using ubigi. I was there for 3 weeks and used 9 gb. The largest data consumer was google maps, so better to use offline maps when you can.

  2. As long as you’re not doom-scrolling IG, YouTube, TikTok all the time even 20GB is fine. I spent 3 weeks in Japan, mostly using Google maps to navigate and had several GB left over.

One tip on iOS is to limit background data usage which can save on GB used. Settings->Cellular, Tap on your esim -> Datamode -> Low Data Mode

  3. I never experienced throttling with Ubigi, even on days with heavy mobile video streaming and heavy mobile hotspotting. Maps will be fine.

You can always add more data to your plan if you run out.

  4. Used 1.2 in 2 days… but a part of it was Reddit on day one, I turned it off in my setting so it does not use data (only wifi) do the same with all social media and streaming app and 10 to 20 should be ok

  5. As far as I can tell from experience, the Airalo and Ubigi unlimited plans are both capped at 2GB/day of high-speed, then they slow you down to a slower speed until night time.
