Hello, I’ve recently been learning some Japanese and have been working on Hiragana and Katakana first. I’m having trouble finding information on combinations (yu-on). The resources I’ve seen say to place the “y” character alongside the first such as ‘kya’ (きゃ) . The problem is every example I’ve seen has been in the western left – right style, and I’m having trouble figuring out in the traditional top-bottom style where to place the や. In the traditional style, does the や go next to the き, or does it belong underneath it?

I’m a N2 learner and currently reading my first light novel 魔女の宅急便。I am able to read almost entire pages apart from 3-4 words on a page but the problem is that I am not able to comprehend and understand whats going on. How do I deal with this?
