Has the practice of only announcing deaths publicly several days after death, and only after the funeral, always been the norm in Japan, or is it a relatively recent phenomenon?

As in, is this practice (like what was done with Toriyama among many others) always been the norm in Japan even before the advent of the internet, or is it a relatively recent development that only started to become common when the internet became popular? If possible, I’d like to hear examples of such cases from the 1990s, 1980s, and prior and know if even back then it was the norm in Japan, or if it is a fairly recent development.
