Dayhike from Nakatsugawa to Nagiso?

Hi everyone,

I’m going to Japan on a very last minute trip in mid-late March, which is exciting but also means that a lot of the smaller rural towns have had all of their accomodation booked out for the spring season. This includes Tsumago and Magome, along the Nakasendō trail.

What do you think of doing a one-day hike from Nakatsugawa to Nagiso, via the Magome/Tsumago route? My plan would be to stay overnight on the outskirts of Nakatsugawa, then the following day set off walking at 8am, and be at Nagiso before it starts to get dark at 5:30pm, then get the train back to Nakatsugawa. I’d ideally stop for maybe an hour each in both Magome and Tsumago, for rest/food.

I’ve done a few long walks around England (Lake/Peak District, Kent etc.), and I’m reasonably fit and no injuries.

I’ve seen one guy do a blog about hiking from Nakatsugawa to Nagiso (not sure if Im allowed to link that), in 4 hours. That seems pretty fast though, so I wanted to ask:

1. Does anyone have any experience doing this, and is it realistic to do in late March and without a stayover in one of the post towns?

2. Are there better recommendations for day-hikes elsewhere in Japan? I’d be coming from Osaka early morning, prior to the planned hike days.

Would love any help at all! Thank you
