Where to Relax in Okinawa for 4/5 Days?

Travelling as a couple for 3 weeks in Japan, late March to mid April. First 2 weeks are pretty packed, landing us in Fukuoka. We are looking at finishing our vacation in Okinawa to unwind and let all the amazing things we did soak in.

Originally, my plan was to stay in the Naha region and take ferries for day trips to the other islands (such as Kerama), but we don’t want to rent a car and from my research most say to enjoy the main island it is easiest to drive. Also, we wanted a more relaxed vibe, not so city-centric.

I’ve read that Ishigaki might be more the pace we are looking for. Something that has a resort-feel, with day-trips available should the mood strike us. We are campers, so we also enjoy hiking, canoe/kayak, and just general wandering off the beaten path to find hidden gems. Our Japanese isn’t great, though we are studying, so we’d also prefer an area that we could muddle our way through (doesn’t have to be super English, but at least patient while we try our best, and can get around without getting lost). While we usually aren’t the type to hide away in a resort, I think after running around Japan a little R&R with a home-base will be welcomed before heading back to our busy lives.

Would you recommend Ishigaki for what we are looking for? And if so, any recommendations on where to stay that can help us unwind, but still have options for the odd adventure and culture? Or, perhaps there is another area in Okinawa that may better suit us.

Appreciate any help! Cheers.
