Weekly Off-Topic Thread – 06 March 2024

You have a question. Maybe it’s about finance, maybe it’s about Japan, or maybe it’s about neither of those things. Regardless of the topic, you know that google is right there in the next browser tab, and you know that google can definitely answer your question. So why don’t you just change tabs? It would be so easy. Yet you don’t change tabs. Why? Because you know, deep down, that it’s going to be much more fun to post your question right here, in r/JapanFinance’s Weekly Off-Topic Thread!

Questions on any topic are welcome. That means everything from “what will the JPY exchange rate be next month?”, to “what will the JPY exchange rate be next year?”, and even “should I exchange my USD for JPY yet?”. Just keep in mind that the sub’s rules still apply, and don’t forget to give yourself the “US Taxpayer” flair if it applies to you.

  1. I have a drawn out question, I think I can fill my yearly Nisa alottment this year and even have a few 10万 to spare, so I was thinking if that happened show should I think, so I made 4 scenarios with dummy values in a situation where a stock/share doubles the first year and then only goes up 50 % the next year just to clearly see what mechanics might be at play.
Please tell me if my thinking is missing important parts of reality.

    Version 1: In Nisa
Buy 100 shares for 1000円, at 10円 per share.
1st: share goes up from 10円 to 20円
    1000円 + 1000円 profit tax free.

2nd year: share goes up from 20円 till 30円
    1000円 + 2000円 profit tax free
    If realized 3000円

Version 2: yearly allotment allocated. Buy Outside Nisa

Buy 100 shares for 1000円, at 10円 per share.
1st year: share goes up from 10円 to 20円
    1000円 + 1000円 profit, 20% tax if sold.
    If realized 1800円 back.

2nd year: share goes up from 20円 till 30円
    1000円 + 2000円 profit, 20% tax if sold.
    If realized 2600円

Version 3: Yearly allotment allocated, Wait until next year
    1st year: Buy 50 shares at 20円 for 1000円
2nd year: shares go from 20円 to 30円
    Total value 1500円
    Profit 500円 tax free.

Version 4: Hybrid, yearly Nisa allotment allocated.
Buy 100 shares for 1000円, at 10円 per share.
1st year share goes up from 10円 to 20円
    1000円 + 1000円 profit, 20% tax
    If realized 1800円 back.

    Buy back shares inside Nisa
    1800/20 = 90 shares

2nd year: share goes up from 20円 till 30円
My 90 shares are now worth 2700円 and are tax free.

That is all to say if my NISA allowance is used, and if stock prices go up it’s better to invest outside of NISA and sell it next year (if it increased) to reinvest it in the NISA?

  2. I seem to be completely daft and cannot figure this out on my own for the life of me (even with online simulators). If I work for a company paying kosei-nenkin for 10 years, then just never work again, how much can I reasonably expect to receive in retirement?

Let’s say I got 10 million yen per year to keep it easy.

If someone could point me in the right direction that would be wonderful.

  3. Apart from Saxo, what other brokerages offer **web** trading APIs (_not_ APIs that connect to a proprietary app for Windows XP) to retail investors?

  4. I have a real simple question. Do I understand correctly that I can not trade or hold U.S. mutual funds as a PR and tax resident of Japan? I have been trying to sort out what to do with a recent inheritance in the U.S. that was mostly equity. With no U.S. address or family over there, it’s starting to look like I will have to sell off the mutual funds.

  5. # Lost on Monex’s trading screen…

I’m just trying to sell my 30 shares of `TSE:1484`.

When I click on `次へ(注文内容確認)`, it doesn’t do anything but reload the same page. I don’t get asked to enter my transaction password.

I’m going insane. How does this work?

**Edit:** I’m sane. Their website is not. I installed the mobile app and could place my order from there.

  6. Anyone know a good car upholstery cleaner for seats? I don’t have access to a steam cleaner. Just curious if anyone has a good recommendation.

  7. Anyone with SMBC Olive know how McDonald’s transactions are coded? I understand you get bonus points for paying there with Olive and you get an extra bonus if you use touchless pay, but does that also apply for mobile orders on the app? For example if I order on the mobile app using Apple Pay, do I get all the bonuses?
