Recommendations and Advice for First-Time Visitors

Hi everyone!

My GF and I are traveling to Japan for the first time from May 9th to May 28th and so far we’ve planned it like this:

Tokyo: 9th to 13th

Kyoto: 13th to 18th

Osaka: 18th to 23rd

Hiroshima: 23rd to 25th

Tokyo: 25th to 28th

The days spent at each destination still aren’t set in stone and depend on the things we end up wanting to see/experience, so there’s definitely some wriggle-room there. Some of the things we’re currently planning to do/see in the various cities/areas are:

**Tokyo**

* Stroll through Shinjuku Area and visit some bars/shops
* Akihabara Electric Town
* TeamLab Planets

**Kyoto**

* Otagi Nenbutsi-ji. Walk down to Arishiyama bamboo forest and Tenryuji garden
* Some temples: Saiho-ji (Koke-dera), Higashiyama Jisho-Ji, Kiyomizu-dera
* Fushimi Inari Shrine Hike Through Torii Gates
* Gion Disctrict
* The Philosopher’s Path

**Osaka**

* Kita District
* Super Nintendo World
* Osaka Castle
* Mount Koya and Okunoin Cemetery

**Also/maybe**

* Two days on Naoshima og Teshima Islands between traveling from Osaka to Hiroshima
* Shirakawa-Go and Takayama mountain villages between Tokyo and Kyoto

There’s room for much more, but we’re a bit overwhelmed and therefore seek some help in here. We’ll also be going through posts in this subreddit to find more inspiration and advice, and then hope for some answers to this post in the meantime 🙂

So, for our questions:

* Are there things from this list you would recommend **not** doing, and in that case, why?
* Do you have any recommendations for other things that are worth doing or even MUST do? 🙂
* In terms of transportation, we’d like to avoid driving ourselves and have considered using as much public transportation as possible. We’ve seen that there’s something called a Japan Rail Pass, and if we’ve understood it correctly you can buy up to 21 days, giving you access to all trains, metros, buses, ferries, and even bullet trains. Would you recommend this considering our plans?

Thanks in advance!
