Why some people say “nooj” instead of “njpw”?

I’m not a native english speaker, nor a japanese one, so I never got why some people say “nooj” and why some people consider that a bad thing to call njpw

NJPW makes sense, as in New Japan Pro Wrestling

but i dunno what the fuck does “NOOJ” means lmao. New O O Japan, what does those 2 O mean?

  1. NEWJapan

    NEWJ

    Nooj

It’s dumb just like geeks that say puro.

Edit since I’ve had to explain this since 1995:

    Puro is short for pro.

Nobody says they like watching PRO.

Puroresu is already the short form of Puroresuringu.

You like Puroyakyu? That’s pro baseball.

    Nobody calls it just “pro”.

  2. Nooj doesn’t really sound good to be but if that’s what someone wants to call it, I would understand what they mean so fair enough

  3. Sadly i dont talk to enough people about wrestling in person to even know that term existed lol i just spell it out when/if it comes up. If anything it graduates as people start understanding wtf im talking about.

Level 1 “i watch Japanese pro wrestling”

Level 2 “New Japan Pro Wrestling”

    Level 3 “NJPW”/”New Japan”

  4. Nooj is a phonetic shorthand nickname for *NEWJ* -apan pro wrestling, like how The Fed is a shorthand nickname for WWE (admittedly an old nickname from when it was the WWF).

People who get upset by these nicknames are not to be taken seriously, because they’re buzzkill dorks.

  5. I’ve never heard anyone not say new Japan. I’m guessing Gen z doesn’t have the time to say all the syllables involved in new Japan.

  6. NEWJ = Nooj

It’s a term of endearment and a lot quicker than saying/typing New Japan Pro Wrestling. I will continue to use it.

No different to how ECW/AEW fans chant ECDub/AEDub.

  7. It’s just a lazy way to say “New Japan.” I have experience with this in how I’m lazy as crap when I speak.

  8. Nooj sounds odd. Removes more context than just calling it New Japan, which in short hand already is removing context.

New Japan Pro Wrestling, makes sense.

New Japan, only makes sense if you know who they are cuz contextually we’re already cutting off what it is. Least you get that it’s something with a name like that, even as short hand.

Nooj cuts off all sense of context from anyone. Broad or even regular niche. Your cutting off your availability in communication moreso by making it more niche than it already was.

  9. Never heard anyone say that, ever and I first watched new Japan on tape and the first match i watched on YouTube was Lesnar vs Angle and I never heard ANYONE call it nooj and I’m never going to call it that

  10. This is the most r/njpw thread I’ve ever seen

    Puro is fine

    Nooj is fine

    The fed is fine

    The dub is fine

  11. “New Japan Pro Wrestling” and “NJPW” are both 6 syllables. “New Japan” is 3. “Nooj” is one.
