Extension of student visa through language school?

Hello everyone,

I’m planning to attend a Japanese language school this year. I want to study for 1 year.

The school I contacted asked about what I wanted to do after I finish my studies, and I answered that I would like to find a job, ideally. The school is quite adament that 1 year isn’t enough to reach N1 (that I know), which is required to find a job. I feel like they’re pushing for me to apply for 2 years with them directly. The government might not grant me a visa if my goal of finding a job is not compatible with my study duration, according to the school. Is it true?

I was thinking applying for 1 year, and extend the visa if I wish to study for longer. Is it not possible?

Thank you for your help!

  2. Your school is giving you some bad advice in a number of different areas.

    >The school is quite adament that 1 year isn’t enough to reach N1 (that I know), which is required to find a job.

They’re absolutely correct that you’re not going to get to N1 in a single year. But also N1 is ***not*** required for working in most Japanese workplaces.

The generally accepted standard is that N2 is about enough to work in a Japanese office. It’s not a direct correlation, as most companies don’t care about your actual JLPT level, but rather your ability to communicate. But N2 is about the level where “can communicate” starts to happen.

    >The government might not grant me a visa if my goal of finding a job is not compatible with my study duration, according to the school.

This is bullshit. As long as you meet the requirements for your working visa the government doesn’t care ***at all*** how long you studied at language school. Language school has *nothing* to do with those requirements.

    >I feel like they’re pushing for me to apply for 2 years with them directly.

They are absolutely doing this, and they’re doing it by lying to you. Please tell me you haven’t given them any money yet, because you need to pick a different school ASAP.
